The TOEFL iBT Speaking section measures your ability to speak English effectively in academic settings. The four questions/tasks resemble real-life situations you might encounter both in and outside of a classroom.
Question 1: Independent Speaking Task — requires you to draw entirely on your own ideas, opinions and experiences when you respond.
Questions 2–4: Integrated Speaking Tasks — require you to combine your English-language skills — listening and speaking, or listening, reading and speaking — just as you would in or out of a classroom.
Prep time: You'll get 15–30 seconds of preparation time before each response, and your response will be 45 or 60 seconds long.
Speaking response: To respond, you'll speak into the microphone and your responses will be recorded.
Test time: You have 17 minutes to complete the Speaking section.
Scoring: Speaking tasks are scored based on the combination of AI scoring and certified human raters. Raw scores are converted to a scaled section score of 0–30.

    Challenges during TOEFL exam:

    • The response time is very less so the student has to be spontaneous.
    • The test is on the computer, some students are not comfortable using microphone and computer.
    • The tasks are integrated so the student has to multitask listen, read speak and write at the same time.
    • High vocabulary
    • Insufficient Time

    Tips to crack TOEFL exam:

Know the format of the test: It is imperative to understand the test format. It also important to know how it is graded. The test checks for grammar, pronunciation, fluency, pacing, organization of thoughts and vocabulary.  Once a student knows what the exam tests he can concentrate on the required skills.

Practice:  Most of the students think that TOEFL is an easy exam and do not practice. This results in bad TOEFL scores. A student has to take maximum full length tests to get familiar with the test and be able to sit through the complete test.

Record your voice: Record your voice and check for mistakes. Work on the drawbacks. A tutor would be a best person to give feedback on your test.

Improve Vocabulary: Learn important phrases, idioms and words to score more on the test.  Read regularly to get into habit of reading.

Join a group: A motivating factor is important to study. A student can join a group or class of students who are preparing for TOEFL.

Use a timer: TOEFL is a timed test .Time management is an important part of the test. So it is a good idea to practice with a timer to get the feel of the test.

Get comfortable with background noise: There might be background noise in the test center. So be comfortable with noises in background. A student can practice with noise of music or tv in the background.
Use abbreviations: As TOEFL is a timed test, make use of abbreviations while making notes during the integrated tasks.

Do not panic: Do not panic if you do not have time as you will end up making more mistakes.
