The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test commonly taken by prospective graduate and business school applicants from all around the world who are interested in pursuing a master's, MBA, specialized master's in business or doctoral degree take the GRE General Test.

ETS, Educational Testing Services, the test makers of the GRE enhanced the test. GRE is now a shorter test still demonstrates your readiness for Graduate or Business schools.

The GRE assesses three main sections:

Exam Structure:

GRE from September 22, 2023 is less than 2 hours excluding breaks.

  • Analytical Writing Assessment, 1 eassy, 30 minutes
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections, 27 questions total, 47 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections, 27 questions, 41 minutes

Note: Total 54 questions + 1 essa y task in 1 hour 58 minutes.

New GRE – Scaled Score

GRE score report have the following scores:

Verbal Reasoning 130–170, in 1-point increments
Quantitative Reasoning 130–170, in 1-point increments
Analytical Writing 0–6, in half-point increments

GRE – Quantitative Reasoning

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Quantitative Reasoning section is designed to assess your mathematical and quantitative reasoning abilities. The Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE consists of four types of questions:

It is important to note that the GRE Quantitative Reasoning section does not require advanced mathematical knowledge beyond the high school level. However, a strong understanding of these basic mathematical concepts and the ability to apply them in problem-solving situations is crucial to performing well on this section of the exam.

GMAT Exam – Verbal Reasoning

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Verbal Reasoning section assesses your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary skills. It measures your ability to understand and analyze written passages, draw conclusions, and evaluate arguments.

The Verbal Reasoning section consists of three main question types:

  • Reading Comprehension: In this question type, you are presented with passages on various topics and are asked questions to assess your understanding of the content. The passages can cover a wide range of subjects, including natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and business-related topics. The questions may ask you to identify main ideas, draw inferences, analyze the author's tone or purpose, and evaluate the logical structure of the passage.
  • Text Completion: These questions consist of sentences with one to three blanks, and you are required to select the most appropriate words or phrases to fill in the blanks. This tests your understanding of the context, vocabulary, and grammar.
  • Sentence Equivalence: In this question type, you are given a sentence with one blank, and you have to select two answer choices that, when inserted into the sentence, create coherent and equivalent sentences. This evaluates your ability to understand sentence meaning and relationships between words.

The Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE covers a wide range of topics and requires a strong command of English language skills. Here are some key areas that are tested:

  • Vocabulary: A good vocabulary is crucial for understanding complex texts and answering questions accurately. The GRE may test your knowledge of words with multiple meanings, idiomatic expressions, and advanced vocabulary words.

Educational Testing Services (ETS) non-profitable organization, US, administers the GRE.

In India, cost for taking the GRE is US$228 (approximately INR 18500)

The GRE is around 4 hours test including the breaks.

"There are 6 sections on the GRE.

  1. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) which has an issue essay and an argument essay each 30 minutes duration.
  2. Two GRE Verbal sections, 20 questions each, 30 minutes duration for each section.
  3. Two GRE Quant sections, 20 questions each, 35 minutes duration for each section.
  4. One Experimental section which can either be one full quant or one full verbal section.

After the AWA section, remaining sections can be in any order."

The Analytical Writing Assessment is scored on a scale of 0-6 in 0.5-point increment. The Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections are each scored on a scale of 130-170, in 1-point increment.

Yes, GRE can be taken once every 21 days, up to five times a rolling year.

If slots are available, you can reschedule your GRE exam by paying an additional fee of US$50 by not less than 4 days by the test date. If you have less than 4 days for your test date, then you can book a new slot by paying the entire fee.

You cannot bring your own calculator for the GRE. Online calculator with basic four operations and square root function is available on screen for the GRE quant section.

For the multiple-answers question in the GRE, you must select all the correct answers to receive a credit for answering the question. No partial score awarded.

Yes, after completing the GRE General Test, if you choose 'Report Scores', you will see your unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores.

On the GRE test day, as part of your test fee, you can choose up to four universities as score recipients. Your official scores will be sent to those universitties in 10–15 days after your test date. You can also send score reports to institutions after test day for a fee of US$30 per recipient. The universities accept only the official scores sent directly by ETS.

GRE Score is valid for 5 years from the test date.

In India, GRE is conducted on all the days including the weekends.

By 'Score Select' option you can choose the score which you like to send to the universities. You can send the best score or the latest score or all the scores.

You can see your GRE quant and verbal scores immediately after your test when you click on 'report scores'. However this is an unofficial score. You get your official GRE score including the AWA score in your ETS account which you created at the time of test registration. You will get a notification to your registered mail id. This usually takes 10-15 days after the test date.

GRE is a computer adaptive test (CAT), adaptive by section. This means, the first quant or the first verbal section will have a mixed bag of difficulty level questions. You will have easy, medium and hard questions. Based on how well you perform on your first section, the second section will have more easy or more medium or more hard questions. For example, if you get 15 correct answers out of 20 questions in the first section, then your second section will have more hard questions and subsequently your score will also be high only when you get into a harder second section.

GRE paper based is not available in India.

GRE Quant section tests the basic concepts of elementary school math, however the questions are tricky and answer choices have trap answers. GRE Verbal section tests vocabulary and reading skills of the students, it could be a bit hard section for Indian students. With right mentors, books and strategies, one can ace the GRE.

There is no age limit mentioned by the ETS for taking the GRE.

The first step in the study abroad journey is taking the GRE. The GRE preparation takes 4 to 6 months based on your skill set. You must start your preparation in 3rd year if you're in a four years undergrad program. You can start in 2nd year as well, as the scores are valid for 5 years.
